In my opinion there is no discipline in science that can be argued to be the most important. We need chemists to make medical drugs, we need biologists to understand how the body works in order for chemists to know what type of medical drug to make, we need physicists to make medical equipment. Zoology helps us understand the biochemistry of animals so we know how to take care of the ecosystem. No field of science is ‘more important’. If you want to study science, I advise you to study what field of science interests you the most, anywhere from zoology and marine biology to physics and mathematics!
I agree with Tom that no one part of science is more important. Medical and Veterninary sciences and research to those areas help to make sure both animals and humans can survive nasty infections. Conservation science is important to ensure we can maintain the biodiversity of our world and Physics and Chemistry help in all areas to explore how the smallest atoms work.
All areas of reserach (not just science) link to eachother and we cant solve big problems without considering lots of different areas. At the moment I am a scientist working in a team of artists which sounds wierd but it is a really good way of communicating health sciences to people in poor countries who may not understand a lot of the sciencey words I would normally use.
