To give a simple example: By discovering more microbes which can help the environment, one such example is Pseudomonas putida which can actually eat oil from the sea when there is a big oil spill as such events can be dangerous for the flora and fauna of the sea.

We can reduce green house emissions which includes gases such as CO2, CH4 and N2O by decreasing our carbon footprint (example: walking to work/school instead of driving a car), Not wasting food as wasting will contribute in increasing our carbon footprint and will be dangerous to the environment leading to global warming.

The biggest concern to me able how we are living is the huge amounts of plastics that we use once and then chuck away! Even when you go to the supermarket it is very difficult to buy food without also buying plastic that will then be thrown away.

Scientists themselves use a very large amount of plastic to carry out their experiments which is a big concern to me. I am currently developing a machine that will allow the plastic that scientists use for their experiments to be used again and again. This would benefit the climate as much as removing
50 million!! cars from our roads — this is double the number of cars in the entire UK!

I think we can all do many small things to benefit the environment such as reusing and recycling our plastic/clothing and other items. I eat a vegan diet which means I don’t eat any animal products. I feel this is important because meat and dairy products like cheese produce a lot of green house emissions and cutting them out of your diet is one way to limit your impact on the environment. However this is a very personal decision.

I try really hard to reduce the amount of plastic packaging I get from shops and I recycle a lot. I try to now only buy loose veg and fruit and go to zero waste shops for my pasta and rice.

I cycle to work. It good for my health and that’s one less car on the road. At work and at home I try to recycle as much as I can. Whilst I do eat and enjoy meat, milk and cheese, I am reducing the amount I eat.
