My work helps in determining how bacteria become resistant to antibiotics and how we can use the antibiotics that we already have, prevent its misuse and how new antibiotics/compunds can be used in treatment of deadly infections.
Tom commented on :
My research is on the immune system which orchestrates the never ending battle between our body and invading germs, Inappropriate activation or not being able to turn it off once the germs have been killed leads to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis and sepsis, some of which are life-threatening. It is hoped that by understanding how cells of the immune system are wired, new drugs can be developed to control the immune system and therefore treat these conditions.

I work on early detect of infections. So we can identify the cause of the infections and apply the best treatment as quickly as possible

My research focuses on helping people to help themselves. The main problem I deal with is antibiotic resistance (where bugs stop responding to our antibiotic medicines) which is made worse when people use antibiotics when they arent needed, or not finishing a full course of medicine.
I work with people to explain the science behind antibiotics but then I step back and just help people decide for themselves how they should change their behaviour. One recent success in Nepal has been that people are now asking more questions when they go to the pharmacy for medication, they want to make sure that they are getting tested and then getting the correct medicine for their illness rather than taking antibiotics ‘just in incase’.
