You can think of a volcano as being like a window into the middle of the earth. They are found in places where the earth’s crust has broken up a little to allow larva and magma from the earth’s core to move up to the surface. This is extremely hot because of the pressure in the earth’s core, it cools quite quickly once it is pushed out of the volcano (in an eruption) but many volcanos don’t actually erupt very often and just remain very hot.

There are also extinct volcanos which have stopped erupting because the pressure from the core has changed and magma no longer moves up through the crust in this location. Extinct volcanos still look pretty exciting though!
